Seoul National University is as well known in Korea as Tsinghua University and Peking University are in China, and a university of this caliber naturally offers plenty of support for students. If you are planning to pursue a graduate degree at SNU, what scholarships can Chinese students apply for?

Today, we are introducing two scholarships that you can apply for before enrollment.

Scholarship 1: Silk Road Scholarship

  1. Eligibility

Applicants from countries in the “Silk Road” region who want to study the humanities or social sciences, such as Korean language, history, culture, politics, and economics.

  1. Number of recipients: About 5 new graduate students

  2. Benefits

Tuition: Full tuition waiver for up to 4 semesters

Living expenses: Up to KRW 600,000 per month for 4 semesters

Airfare: One round-trip economy-class ticket, up to KRW 1,000,000

Korean language training fee: Waived at the Language Education Institute

During the international student admissions period for each fall semester

  1. Review process

Applicants submit admission materials to the university admissions office -> applicants submit scholarship applications to the university’s Office of International Affairs -> each college/school selects recipients based on the admission documents -> the decision is announced

Scholarship 2: Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP/GKS)

  1. Eligibility: International students applying to SNU graduate programs

  2. Number of recipients: About 40-60 per year

  3. Benefits

Full tuition: Tuition waived for 4 semesters for master’s students and 6 semesters for doctoral students

Living expenses: KRW 1,000,000 per month

Airfare: One round-trip economy-class ticket

Korean language training: 1 year

Korean language training is mandatory. If a student does not reach TOPIK Level 3 within one year, he or she is not eligible to begin degree coursework.

Other benefits: medical insurance, research funding, thesis printing fees, and settlement allowance

University recommendation track: Applicants submit their applications to SNU’s admissions office -> the National Institute for International Education makes the selection

Embassy recommendation track: Applicants submit their applications to the Korean embassy in their home country -> the National Institute for International Education makes the selection
