Studying in South Korea requires a certain level of Korean proficiency. Otherwise, it can create significant difficulties during your studies. So you can either reach the required Korean level before you go, or enroll in a Korean preparatory program and continue on to university after passing the program. Next, let’s look at how to choose a preparatory program in South Korea that is most beneficial for you.

  1. Prioritize top universities

Generally speaking, students who plan to study abroad have completed high school or have an even higher level of education, so there are many preparatory programs to choose from. On top of that, the application threshold for preparatory programs is slightly lower than for direct admission. That means you can absolutely choose a preparatory program at a top-ranked university. Studying in a preparatory program at a well-known university also lets you experience the campus atmosphere in advance. Most of your classmates will also be aiming for prestigious universities, so the learning environment will be better and will motivate you to study harder. Of course, you should always choose according to your own ability. The best choice is the one that suits you.

  1. Consider the location of the institution

Most preparatory programs are established under universities with the goal of providing the university with a strong pipeline of talent, such as the preparatory program at Seoul National University. After you have decided which university you want to attend in the future, you can prioritize that university’s preparatory program. Next, you can consider good preparatory programs near the university.

  1. Consider your financial situation

The cost of preparatory programs varies by region. Seoul is more expensive, with tuition and living expenses totaling roughly RMB 80,000 to 100,000, while programs in other regions are cheaper, usually around RMB 50,000 to 80,000. Of course, cost is only one factor to consider. You also need to think about which university you want to get into, which major you want to study, and whether the preparatory program can better help you achieve that goal. Only by considering all of these factors can you make a reasonable choice.

Preparatory study is only the starting stage of studying in South Korea. Your academic results will determine whether you can successfully enter your desired university and continue your studies, so you cannot relax during this stage. In general, preparatory study lasts anywhere from six months to two years. Most students can complete it in about a year, graduate from the preparatory program, and smoothly move on to undergraduate or master’s studies.

Wishing all students success in their studies!
