The range of academic disciplines constantly expands as new departments and programs are launched every year.
The University has two campuses, thirteen schools and a research institute. Over its 75-year history, MGIMO has evolved from a training school for Russian foreign service officers to a university that breeds innovative leaders with a global perspective. The mission of MGIMO, as an academic center and a think-tank, is to provide top-quality training and research on the contemporary agenda of global politics and economics, shape a new generation of foreign policy practitioners and thinkers for the benefit of Russia and the international community. It implies promoting MGIMO’s potential on the Russian and global scale as:
- a leading university in Eurasia, Central-Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, continental East Asia, the Middle East among the universities of socio-economic, legal and language studies, as well as, in the field of international fundamental and applied research; - one of the main hubs of university networks of such multilateral institutions as the Commowealth of Independent States, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS and the Eurasian Economic Union; - a center that sets high standards and promotes the best practices of global think-tanks among Russian and post-Soviet universities, as well as, promotes Russian higher education in the global academic and research environment; - the main university for academic diplomacy, which can implement bilateral and multilateral initiatives by expert review and consulting and can contribute to implementing foreign policy in Russia and abroad; - to promote the long-term interests of Russia in the international arena.
MGIMO has granted honorary doctorate degrees to prominent foreign politicians, public experts, diplomats and scholars, such as the presidents of France and Greece, Chile and Ecuador, Serbia, and Guinea, Indonesia and Finland, Azerbaijan and Jordan; prime ministers of Japan and India; general secretaries of the United Nations and UNESCO.
A key priority of MGIMO’s international policy is the development of bilateral and multilateral international relations, and the promotion of educational and scientific exchanges.
