The U.S. News Best Global Universities Rankings evaluates research-focused institutions worldwide. Published annually since 2014, it ranks universities based on their academic research performance and reputation, using 13 indicators weighted to emphasize research output and impact.
The ranking considers universities that meet a minimum threshold of publications and have been included in the results of at least one of U.S. News's two reputation surveys.

Indicator Definitions
Global Research Reputation (12.5%)
Based on U.S. News's global academic reputation survey, which asks academics to rate institutions for their research programmes. This is a rolling survey that aggregates responses from the most recent three to five years to build a reliable picture of institutional reputation.
Regional Research Reputation (12.5%)
Similar to the global reputation measure but focused on regional perceptions. This indicator captures how universities are viewed by academics within their own geographic region.
Publications (10%)
The total number of academic papers — including journal articles, reviews, and conference proceedings — published by an institution. Data is sourced from Clarivate's Web of Science.
Books (2.5%)
The number of published books and book chapters attributed to an institution. This indicator ensures that disciplines where books are a primary research output (such as humanities and social sciences) are represented.
Conferences (2.5%)
The number of conference papers published by an institution, reflecting the importance of conference proceedings in fields such as engineering and computer science.
Normalized Citation Impact (10%)
The average number of citations per paper, normalized by field, publication year, and document type. This indicator measures research quality independently of the volume of output.
Total Citations (7.5%)
The overall number of citations received by an institution's publications, measuring the total influence and impact of its research.
Number of Publications among the 10% Most Cited (12.5%)
The count of an institution's papers that rank in the top 10% of citations globally within their field and publication year. This measures the volume of highly impactful research.
Percentage of Publications among the 10% Most Cited (10%)
The proportion of an institution's total output that ranks in the top 10% of citations globally. This normalizes for institution size to measure research excellence.
International Collaboration — Relative to Country (5%)
Measures the proportion of an institution's internationally co-authored papers relative to the national average. This rewards institutions that collaborate internationally more than is typical for their country.

The absolute proportion of an institution's papers that include co-authors from other countries, measuring the breadth of its international research network.
Number of Highly Cited Papers — Top 1% (5%)
The count of an institution's papers that rank in the top 1% of global citations within their field and publication year. This captures the most exceptional research outputs.
Percentage of Highly Cited Papers — Top 1% (5%)
The proportion of an institution's total output that ranks in the top 1% of global citations, normalized for institution size.
