The University of Melbourne is one of the most well-known universities in Australia and in the world, but it is also one of the hardest to get into in Australia. That said, difficult does not mean impossible. Let’s look at what you need in different situations to apply to the University of Melbourne, and which category you fall into.
Foundation Study Requirements
If you are currently in Grade 11 or Grade 12 in China and plan to study in Melbourne at this point, you need to apply through the University of Melbourne’s foundation program, Trinity College.

Notes
-
IELTS scores are valid for one year, and only scores of 5.0 or above can be submitted with an application;
-
First-year high school results are not included in the average;
-
Students who graduated from high school one year ago or earlier are not eligible for the University of Melbourne foundation program.
Undergraduate Study Requirements
-
High school average: an average score of 85 is required; for current university students applying, applicants from 211/985 universities must have a weighted average above 80% (or above 85% for business programs), while applicants from non-211/985 universities must have a weighted average above 85% (with business and engineering-related majors requiring at least 90 or 95%);
-
English requirements: IELTS 6.5 overall with no individual band below 6.0; some programs require IELTS 7.0–7.5.
Notes
-
The University of Melbourne does not recognize the Gaokao, so applications can only be submitted using high school average grades;
-
The University of Melbourne’s admissions review process is very slow, so the timing of an offer is not fixed. Plan early and prepare the required documents in advance;
-
Admission requirements are extensive. For example, some business programs require GMAT or GRE scores, and Teaching in Education requires an additional TCAT test.
