Recent survey reports show that the most popular U.S. destinations for international students are California, New York, and Texas.
In general, the reason a region appeals to international students is simple: it either offers abundant job opportunities or rich educational resources.
Today, let’s take a closer look at California and see what makes it so attractive for study abroad students.
First, California has many top-ranked universities. The state is home to more than 40 public universities and around 10 private universities, along with nearly 10 liberal arts and community colleges. Whether it is Stanford University, the California Institute of Technology, the University of California, Berkeley, or UCLA, these are all world-famous institutions and naturally attract large numbers of international students. Supported by a strong education system, California’s higher education enjoys an excellent global reputation. A degree from a California university carries significant value and is recognized across the United States and around the world.
Second, California’s public university system is highly developed. In general, it has two major public systems: the University of California system and the California State University system. Within the University of California system, the schools account for 10% of the universities ranked in the U.S. News & World Report Top 100. Each school also has its own strengths and specialties, giving students from different backgrounds plenty of options to find the right fit in California.
Third, California offers abundant job opportunities. In terms of total economic output alone, California is the largest state economy in the United States, accounting for 14% of the national total, and its per capita GDP is as high as $50,000. This is supported by a mature industrial structure, with major strengths in sectors such as high technology, biotechnology, and agriculture. High tech is especially prominent: 40% of the 100 fastest-growing high-tech companies in the United States are located in California, and high-tech exports from Silicon Valley alone account for one-third of the total.
It is also worth mentioning that the world-renowned Claremont Colleges consortium is located here. The consortium operates on an Oxford-Cambridge model, with each college running independently while sharing resources. Within the consortium, each college has its own character and academic strengths, and its undergraduate graduates earn some of the highest salaries in the United States.
Resources are abundant here, and there are many opportunities for interaction. Campuses are only separated by a wall, so students can cross-enroll in courses and share libraries, academic resources, extracurricular activities, and even networking opportunities.
This is California, a study destination beloved by students from all over the world.
