After graduation, most working professionals use English far less often. As a result, some people who once had a decent command of English see their ability drop sharply, while others with weaker English gradually forget most of what they learned.

So if working professionals want to make further progress and improve their IELTS scores, especially their speaking, what should they do? Here are a few practical suggestions.

In general, university graduates usually have at least a CET-4 level of English. But after working for a while, many people not only find themselves unable to speak English, they even forget basic grammar. Let alone introducing themselves, they may not even remember how to say many common things. If you want to improve your IELTS speaking in a short period of time, you need to work on targeted skills in everyday situations, including vocabulary, grammar, and expression.

Unlike other English exams, IELTS Speaking does not require a lot of long, complicated sentences or specialized vocabulary. It is mainly assessed on fluency and accuracy, with an emphasis on everyday topics. When you take the test, answer Part 1 accurately, express yourself precisely in Part 2, and do your best in the more difficult Part 3.

Unlike students who are just starting to learn English, the biggest obstacle for adults is not a lack of focus, but the psychological barrier that keeps them from speaking. Adults usually feel a heavier mental burden and want to say exactly what they mean, often with more depth and complexity. But that often makes it even harder to speak at all.

In terms of strategy, beyond doing practice tests, you also need to speak out loud. Whether it is simple sentence patterns or high-frequency words, keep practicing boldly and consistently so that your accuracy and fluency both improve.

In fact, one very simple method is to directly replace the everyday words in your life with English. For example, when you see something familiar, do not think about how to say it in Chinese first. Describe it directly in English. Even filler words and transition words can be switched to English.

Many people see speakers who are very fluent and want to match them, so they imitate their pronunciation, intonation, and so on. In reality, unless you are aiming for a top score, there is no need to spend too much time on that part.

If you still find yourself struggling a lot with speaking, you might want to find a speaking partner or tutor and practice with them for about an hour a day. Within a week, you will notice your expression beginning to change, and you will be able to start communicating in English.

Everything is hard at the beginning, but once you get started, it is not so hard anymore.
