During your study abroad period, safety remains the top priority. Today, we’re sharing some essential safety tips for studying abroad, so every student can study safely and return home safely.

Before you go abroad, be sure to learn as much as possible about the customs and cultural habits of your destination country. After you arrive, make every effort to talk with local international students and teachers, listen to their experiences, and keep their advice in mind to strengthen your own safety awareness.

  1. Transportation Safety

When you are away from home, try to use public transportation whenever possible. Do not hail rides casually, and avoid taking a taxi alone whenever you can. Also, remember to pay attention to local traffic conditions and route details when you go out. Don’t assume you are bad with directions—if you make the effort, you can memorize the way.

Of course, don’t think that taking public transportation means you can ignore everything else. Try not to make eye contact with strangers, and avoid getting too involved in other people’s business. If you are on a double-decker or multi-level vehicle, choose the lower level and sit near the driver whenever possible; it is much safer.

  1. Interpersonal Safety

When interacting with others, it is hard to know what they really want, so it is best to stay cautious. Whether you are male or female, you should have a strong sense of self-protection. When someone invites you somewhere, think it through carefully. Either go with a group of friends or decline outright. Safety comes first.

  1. Privacy Safety

Many international students use social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter after going abroad, and some even post many personal details online. For people with bad intentions, that information is very useful; for us, it is a serious warning sign. After all, countless cases have shown how important it is to protect your privacy.

  1. Financial Safety

As the saying goes, do not show off your wealth. In fact, whether you are at home or abroad, when you are out and about, try to minimize the exposure of money and valuables to avoid unnecessary risk. This is especially true overseas: not only should you avoid traveling alone whenever possible, you should also avoid letting others see how much money you have.

In particular, when you go out for leisure, carry valuables with you and reduce how often you use cash.

In general, when you are away from home, unexpected situations are inevitable. Keep a low profile as much as possible and study abroad safely.
