In July, are you moving on to further study after leaving university, becoming a working professional, or still feeling uncertain? If you have not decided yet, don’t worry. QS’s latest survey shows that 56% of people have delayed their study plans because of the pandemic, and more people are choosing to take a gap year after graduation.

During this gap period, there are many things you can do to improve your employability and make it easier to find a job later.

  1. Learn a new language

In a globalized society, both multinational companies and local businesses prefer employees who can speak a foreign language. Although it is inconvenient to travel and immerse yourself in another culture during the pandemic, there are plenty of online language courses available, so you can start learning from home.

  1. Take part in volunteer work

If you already have a field you are interested in, try taking part-time or internship work in that industry. In most cases, as a recent graduate, you may not yet know exactly what you want to do. In that case, doing more volunteer work can help you learn about different industries and strengthen your résumé.

  1. Build transferable skills

Whatever job you do, you will need transferable skills such as resilience under pressure, time management, and teamwork. You can start developing these skills in everyday life. Even a supermarket part-time job can help you gain experience.

  1. Complete an online course

In response to the pandemic, many universities have launched online courses. From Harvard to Oxford, and from data analysis to Shakespearean literature, the wide range of online options gives students more freedom and choice. Completing an online course not only broadens your knowledge, but also shows self-learning and self-discipline.

  1. Think carefully about your next step

The time after graduation gives you plenty of space to think about your next move: should you continue your studies, or should you enter the workforce? Either choice deserves careful thought.
